GymNation Launches Workout in Total Darkness With Instructors Wearing Night Vision Goggles

GymNation is taking mirrors, screens and even sight out of the group fitness experience with the launch of a 45-minute workout conducted entirely in the dark.
The Middle East fitness operator is introducing Dans le Noir: Class in the Dark, a new format in which participants complete functional strength and movement exercises without being able to see the room, each other or themselves.
The exception is the instructor, who wears night vision goggles to move through the space and monitor participants throughout the session.
The concept borrows from dining-in-the-dark experiences, which remove visual information to change how participants perceive their surroundings. GymNation is applying a similar idea to fitness, with the stated goal of shifting attention away from appearance and toward movement and body awareness.
Before the lights are turned off, participants complete a preparation sequence incorporating balance, joint mobility and proprioceptive exercises. Once the room goes dark, instruction is delivered by voice through wireless headphones alongside an accompanying soundtrack.
Participants use weighted vests, wrist weights and dumbbells during a sequence incorporating functional movement, strength exercises and breathwork.
There are no phones, cameras or photography permitted during the class.
The unusual format also addresses an issue GymNation identified in its 2026 Fitness Report. According to the company, 47% of respondents cited fear of judgement as the primary barrier preventing them from joining or returning to a gym.
By eliminating visibility altogether, GymNation is testing a literal approach to removing some of the visual and social elements that can make traditional fitness environments intimidating.
“We're obsessed with the visual in fitness - mirrors, cameras, content. We've turned working out into a performance, and for a lot of people, that performance is terrifying before they've even picked up a weight,” said Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation.
“Dans le Noir removes all of that. What goes on inside those four walls is something we're deliberately not going to over-explain - because the whole point is that you have to experience it. It is, genuinely, the best workout you've never seen.”
There is also a physiological rationale behind removing visual feedback. Proprioception refers to the body's ability to perceive its position and movement without relying on vision. When visual information is reduced or removed, the nervous system must rely more heavily on other sensory information to maintain balance and coordinate movement.
GymNation sports scientist Aderito Manuel said the format is intended to increase that reliance on proprioceptive feedback.
“When we remove visual input, the body is forced to rely on proprioception - our internal sense of position, balance, and movement,” said Manuel. “This activates stabiliser muscles that are routinely underused in conventional training environments.”
Manuel characterized training without visual feedback as a way of increasing the body's reliance on internal movement cues, although the effects will vary depending on the exercise, individual and training environment.
The concept also reflects a broader shift in group fitness toward formats that compete on experience as much as exercise selection. Immersive lighting, music, technology and specialized environments have become increasingly common across boutique and traditional fitness concepts. GymNation's approach is unusual in that it removes one of those sensory inputs altogether.
It also challenges one of the most established features of the gym environment: the mirror.
GymNation cited research published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology examining the psychological effects of exercising in front of mirrors. The company argues that removing mirrors may help some participants focus less on appearance and more on internal sensations during exercise.
For GymNation, the format provides another way to differentiate its group fitness offering while addressing the intimidation and self-consciousness that can prevent some consumers from participating in gyms.
Dans le Noir will launch at select GymNation locations across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Capacity will be limited and advance registration will be required.
Each session runs for 45 minutes, with weighted vests, wrist weights, dumbbells and wireless headphones provided to participants.
And while members won't be able to see anything once the workout begins, the person responsible for keeping the class on track will: the instructor will spend the entire session navigating the darkness in night vision goggles.
