Technogym and World Athletics have launched the RUN X World Treadmill Championship, a global indoor running competition that will take place at participating fitness clubs worldwide. The competition began on October 23, 2026, with qualifying rounds continuing through January 24, 2027, ahead of regional competitions and a world final in Italy.

The championship introduces a standardized 5 km treadmill race, allowing participants to compete against runners at their own fitness clubs and internationally. The format is open to runners of different experience levels, from recreational participants to competitive athletes.

For fitness operators, RUN X creates an opportunity to host organized running competitions within their facilities, using connected equipment to record results and provide participants with access to global rankings. The initiative also reflects a broader effort to bring community-based running events into indoor fitness environments.

Participating clubs will use the Technogym Digital Ecosystem to automatically record and certify runners' performances. Results will appear on a live global leaderboard, allowing participants to compare their times with others locally and internationally.

The qualification period runs from October 23, 2026, through January 24, 2027. Five designated global event days are scheduled for October 24, November 14, December 12, January 16 and January 23. Participating clubs can also organize additional local running days throughout the qualification period.

Runners who finish in the top 25% of their respective countries will advance to the regional phase, scheduled for January 30 through February 28, 2027.

The world final will take place March 20–21, 2027, at Technogym Village in Cesena, Italy. The top 10 runners globally in each age group and men's and women's category will receive invitations to compete for the inaugural world treadmill running titles.

The championship carries a total prize pool of $100,000. World Athletics will also award wildcard entries to the respective national member federations of the overall men's and women's 5 km winners for the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Yangzhou, China, scheduled for the following week.

French distance runner Jimmy Gressier and American long-distance runner Sara Hall have been named global ambassadors for the competition.

The partnership combines Technogym's connected fitness equipment and club network with World Athletics' role as the international governing body for athletics. It also establishes a competition format that allows fitness facilities to participate in a global running event without requiring participants to travel to traditional road races or athletics venues during the qualifying stages.
