Nearly six decades after Joe Gold first opened the doors of Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, the brand that defined modern fitness is heading back to where it all began. The company announced plans to reopen its Southern California franchise market for the first time in 36 years—creating a major opportunity for entrepreneurs to enter one of the world’s most competitive fitness regions.
“Gold’s Gym has always been a leader in health and fitness, and this decision marks a huge step forward for the brand, our franchisees and our members,” said Co-CEO Danny Waggoner. “In building on our foundation of strength and performance through elevated experiences, new innovations and our continued commitment to our community, we are pushing the brand into a new era while remaining true to our heritage.”
The move follows the transition of long-time franchisees Angel and Willy Banos, who have led the SoCal market for decades, to new ownership. Gold’s Gym credited the Banos family for their enduring partnership and the foundation they built, while looking ahead to the next generation of franchise entrepreneurs.
The brand will continue to own and operate its legendary Venice Beach location—known globally as “The Mecca of Bodybuilding”—and will focus on developing new fitness centers designed around strength and performance. The new vision was showcased earlier this year with the opening of Gold’s Gym Austin, a flagship location that introduced upgraded design, advanced equipment, and enhanced member amenities.
Over the past 18 months, Gold’s Gym and its franchisees have opened more than 20 locations across the U.S., Canada, Spain, and France. The company plans to add 40 new gyms globally in the coming year, alongside a development agreement for 60 new gyms in Brazil.
“We are excited about the opportunities ahead for the brand, and the continued support of our members around the world,” said Co-CEO Brad Reynolds. “There’s a reason Gold’s Gym is the most iconic name in fitness and we expect, of course, to only get stronger.”
