The National Academy of Sports Medicine has launched a new peer-reviewed publication aimed at narrowing the gap between academic research and day-to-day coaching practice.

The Journal of Fitness, Wellness, and Human Performance will focus on translating scientific findings into practical applications for trainers, coaches, and clinicians. While many academic journals emphasize theory and controlled laboratory research, this publication is positioned around implementation, with content designed to help professionals apply research insights directly with clients.

According to NASM, the journal will prioritize evidence-based practice across several disciplines, including fitness and sports performance, wellness and health promotion, nutrition and dietetics, and sports medicine and physical therapy. The goal is to provide practitioners with research that is both methodologically sound and usable in real-world settings.

The journal will be published twice per year in partnership with KGL Meridian. Each issue will include peer-reviewed research articles, case reports, and critically appraised topics intended to examine how emerging data can influence program design, injury prevention, recovery strategies, and overall human performance.

Leadership of the publication includes Co-Editors-in-Chief Dr. Scott W. Cheatham and Dr. Guillermo Escalante, both of whom have backgrounds in applied research and practitioner education. The editorial direction emphasizes relevance to working professionals, not solely academic audiences.

Full access to the journal will be included with NASM One, the organization’s subscription-based professional development platform. Abstracts and selected articles will be made publicly available.

The launch comes as the fitness industry continues to emphasize measurable outcomes and evidence-based programming, particularly as operators and independent professionals look to differentiate services in a competitive market. By formalizing a research outlet focused on applied practice, NASM is positioning itself to serve both the academic and commercial sides of the fitness and wellness sector.

The journal is currently accepting submissions from researchers and clinician-scientists whose work centers on practical application in coaching and human performance environments.
