GymNation has introduced NapTime, a class designed to help members rest rather than exercise, timed to coincide with World Sleep Day.

The initiative highlights a growing issue across the UAE and wider Gulf region. Regional research shows that while roughly half of adults report sleeping between six and eight hours a night, only around one in five reach the recommended eight hours. In the UAE, about one in five adults sleep five hours or less, reflecting the demands of late nights, long workdays and fast-paced lifestyles.

NapTime is structured as a 45-minute session that begins with light stretching and gentle yoga, followed by guided breathwork and meditation aimed at calming the nervous system. The class then transitions into a sleep period where participants lie down in a curated environment with beds, pillows, duvets and eye masks while listening to live handpan music.

The class is also phone-free. Members place their phones in a secure box before the session begins, a move designed to remove digital distractions and encourage healthier sleep habits. Research shows that up to 90 percent of people use their phones in the hour before bed, and blue light exposure can suppress melatonin production and delay sleep onset.

GymNation says the class is intended to complement traditional training programs by emphasizing recovery as part of overall performance.

“Sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools we have, yet it’s the one most people neglect,” said Desmond Wong, a coach at GymNation. “When you combine light movement, breathwork and meditation, you help the nervous system shift into a calmer state which prepares the body for deep rest.”

The concept was developed with input from clinical psychologist Dr. Gurveen Ranger of Sage Clinics, who noted that studies show extending sleep can improve physical performance by around 9 percent, while sleep deprivation can reduce performance by a similar amount.

By launching the concept on World Sleep Day, GymNation is tying the class to a broader conversation around recovery, sleep optimization and nervous system regulation, trends that are increasingly finding their way into gym programming.

NapTime classes will run weekly at GymNation Downtown Dubai starting March 14.
