Planet Fitness has been named a platinum-level employer on the 2026 Where You Work Matters list, a workforce ranking based on employee outcomes across major US companies.

The list is powered by the American Opportunity Index, a project from the Schultz Family Foundation and the Burning Glass Institute, with methodology developed alongside Harvard Business School’s Project on Managing the Future of Work.

Unlike traditional workplace rankings, the index evaluates companies using publicly available data tied to real employee outcomes, including hiring, pay, promotion, and career mobility. The 2026 analysis reviewed nearly 55,000 roles across 1,750 US employers, drawing from data covering more than 12 million workers. Companies cannot opt in, submit materials, or pay to be included.

Planet Fitness was placed in the highest tier, reflecting performance across metrics tied to career progression and workforce opportunity.

For operators, the recognition comes as labor remains one of the industry’s most persistent challenges. Hiring, retention, and frontline career pathways continue to shape club performance, particularly in high-volume, low-price models where staffing consistency directly impacts member experience.

Planet Fitness has built its workforce model around scale and standardization, supported by internal training and development systems such as Planet Fitness University. The company also offers benefits tied to healthcare, scheduling flexibility, and financial wellness, alongside system-wide initiatives that engage both corporate employees and franchise operators.

The ranking signals how workforce strategy is increasingly being measured beyond culture or brand perception, and instead through tangible outcomes like advancement and earnings growth.

As competition for talent continues across service sectors, recognition tied to mobility and career pathways may carry more weight for operators looking to attract and retain staff at scale.
